Amish Recipe - Festive Fruit Salad

1 (15 oz.) can Mandarin Oranges, drained
1 ½ cup Red Seedless Grapes, halved
1 ½ cup Green Seedless Grapes, halved
1 (10 oz.) jar Maraschino Cherries, rinsed, drained – Optional
1 can Pineapple Chunks, drained
2 cups Miniature Marshmallows
1 cup Flaked Coconut - Optional
1 cup Sour Cream

Combine all ingredients except sour cream. Just before serving, add sour cream. Toss to coat. This makes a great holiday dish.

What is the shelf life for popcorn?

Nearly, forever, as long as you keep your popcorn in an air tight container and in a cool dry area, so the popcorn does not draw moisture or lose what moisture is already in the popcorn and needed to make it pop. If stored properly in an airtight plastic or glass container, your popcorn can potentially stay good and ready to pop, for many years. However, most of us will eat all the popcorn before it has a chance to sit around the house for years.

Amish Recipe - Pumpkin Bread

Pumpkin Bread

2/3 cup Lard
2 2/3 cup Sugar
2 cups Pumpkin
2/3 cup Water
3 1/3 cup Flour
2 tsp. Baking Soda
2/3 cup Raisins
1 1/2 tsp. Salt
1 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1 tsp. Clove
2/3 cup Nuts
4 Eggs

Cream lard and sugar until fluffy. Add remaining ingredients and pour into pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 70 minutes or until done. Makes 2 loaves.

Black Jewell Limited Supply

Note: Due to a miscalculation by the grower and supplier, our Black Jewel popcorn is now in limited supply. They have told us they are currently out of stock and will not have anything more available to us until harvest time this fall. Once our current limited supply has been sold, the Black Jewel popcorn will be temporarily out of stock until later this fall of 2006. If you are interested in finding a replacement item until the Black Jewel once again becomes available, we recommend that you try the Yellow Lady Finger Popcorn, Multi-Color Lady Finger Popcorn or the Baby White Popcorn. All three (3) varieties are a very small, tender kernel that we are sure you will enjoy just as much, if not more than the Black Jewel Popcorn. Approximately 70 percent is eaten in the home (home popped and pre-popped) and about 30 percent outside the home (theaters, stadiums, schools, etc.). Unpopped popcorn accounts for approximately 90 percent of sales for home consumption.

Amish Recipe - Apple Dumplings

Apple Dumplings

Ingredients:
2 cups flour 2/3 cup shortening
2 ½ tsp. baking powder ½ cup milk
½ tsp. salt 6 apples, peeled and cut in halves

Sauce:
2 cups brown sugar ¼ cup butter
2 cups water ½ tsp. cinnamon

Make dough like pie dough. Roll out dough; cut in squares (approx. 4-5” square). Place half an apple on each square. Wet edges of dough and press into a ball around the apple. Put dumplings in a pan; pour sauce over all and bake. (375 degree oven for 25 – 40 minutes or until dough is golden brown.)

This recipe comes from our featured cookbook of the month called “The Wooden Spoon Cookbook” by Miriam Miller (Item No. AMT-P-704). The recipes in the cookbook were compiled by a 17 year old Amish girl. You will get 194 pages of recipes that were some of Miriam’s favorite recipes from her mother and grandmother. You will also get to read some of Miriam’s personal childhood memories and get a glimpse into an Amish girls life. I’m sure you and your family will thoroughly enjoy this wonderful cookbook.
